A British Protest.
Our Canton correspondent writes:- It has long been
privately known that Prefect Hsueh Yin-wen, of the Bureau of
Foreign Affairs in Canton, has been stationed in Hongkong in
order to examine all Chinese emigrants who leave there for Peru. The fact having come to the knowledge of the Government of
Hongkong, the latter has informed the authorities in Canton
that no agreement exists between the British and Chinese
Government which sanctions the residence in wongkong per-
-manently of an official of the Chinese Government. The Hong-
-kong authorities consequently lodged a protest with the
Viceroy of Canton, at the same time pointing out that steamers
taking emigrants to Peru leave the Colony at very irregular
intervals and therefore Mr. Hsueh's permanent residence was
unnecessary. There would be no objection to Mr. Hsuch visiting
Hongkong on the occasion of the steamor being about to leave for
Peru.
